Shostakovich quartet #3/ Whiskerman at First Friday

February 27, 2012

Thanks to everyone who came out to my shows in the last couple weeks. Fun times! I’ve got a few more things this week.

Monday 2/27 – The Town Quartet is playing Shostakovich’s 3rd string quartet tonight at the Revolution Cafe in San Francisco. 3248 22nd St (between Mission St & Bartlett St) San Francisco, CA 94110, 8:00.

Tuesday 2/28  – The Town Quartet is playing Shostakovich’s 3rd string quartet at The Musical Offering in Berkeley. 2430 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, California 94704, 5:30. From their website:

Author Wendy Lesser will discuss her biography of Shostakovich, entitled Music for Silent Voices: Shostakovich and his 15 Quartets.  This biography is structured around a chronological consideration of each of the quartets (which were such an important part of his compositional output), and the events and forces acting upon the composer during the creation of these works.

What evening of discussion of string quartets would be complete without a performance by ‘The Town’ Quartet? Our resident string quartet will perform Shostakovich’s Third String Quartet in F major, as part of the presentation that evening.  The third quartet traverses an emotional terrain of irony and loss, with a brutal and bittersweet mournfulness.

Friday 3/2 – Whiskerman is playing at the Uptown in Oakland as part of First Friday. 1928 Telegraph Avenue Oakland, CA 94612-2202. W/ The Blank Tapes, Tumbleweed Wanderers, The Love Dimension. 9:00, 21+, Free!

Sunday 3/4 – The Town Quartet is playing at the Musical Offering in Berkeley. It’s Vivaldi’s birthday, so maybe I’ll be able to convince the guys to play a concerto for strings. 2430 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, California 94704, 1:00, all ages, donation.
