The Blog Is Back, 2013 Edition!

June 30, 2013

Hello world! After 11 months of neglecting the internet I’m back! Actually, I’ll probably keep neglecting most of it, but my plan is to keep up with this blog.

A lot has changed in the past year. The Town Quartet has a new violinist, Mia Bella D’Augelli. She’s a Chico native and current Mills College music student. She’s fit in nicely and we’ve done a lot of cool things with her in the group, such as accompanying the Swedish silent film, Terje Vigen, at the Pacific Film Archive, performing a concert of Cherubini, Saint-Saens, and Milhaud at the Legion of Honor Rodin Gallery, and most recently, acting as the reduced orchestra in Opera On Tap’s fantastic production of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro at the California Conservatory Theater in San Leandro (“One of the best show’s I’ve seen all year!” – Kurt Patzner). We’re playing at Vessel Gallery for the First Friday Artwalk this coming Friday (more info below), with Brady Anderson on cello. We’ll play some Boccherini, a Telemann Viola concerto, and some selections from our core repertoire. We’re also opening up the Cannons and Clouds album release show July 25th at The Chapel, possibly with a quartet by Ginastera.

Judgement Day did a headlining tour from the Southwest to the Midwest to the Northwest back in October. In January we opened up for Pinback and toured the west coast as far as Denver for a couple of weeks. In the general, the band is in slow mode, and we’ll play shows every now and then. Look out for shows in August and September.

As people in the know know, its been a while since I played in Whiskerman. It was hard to leave such an awesome band, but sometimes you can’t do everything. For some of its members the band is their most important music project, especially Graham, and rightfully so. Things became more complicated as I had to take time off for touring and my freelance career. Having to relearn a song after the band had learned to play it without me, over and over, was not that fun. Unfortunately I subject many of my bands to this treatment. Some can manage (La Dee Da, new album dropping in September!), but Whiskerman is a full steam ahead type of band.

Earlier this Spring I joined The Musical Art Quintet, a string quintet with bass that plays in jazz and world music idioms. Its been fun! I get to improvise and play with some great players. This group can rehearse during the day, which is great for my schedule. We did an awesome residency in Nevada City for their Music in the Mountains series, and played a bunch of gigs in the Bay Area, including the Kaiser Rooftop Series, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, and SF Jazz at Stanford. We tend to play often, so check the schedule for dates.

MAQ is affiliated with Classical Revolution, which separately gave me some cool opportunities. We started having Classical Revolution East Bay every last Wednesday at Awaken Cafe in Oakland, which if I may say, is a roaring success. I also played with them in San Jose at the MACLA, and started a string trio called, “The Telegraph Trio,” with Charith and Matt Sz. Look out for the Revolution!

When I can I sit in with a band called A Sun That Never Sets. Brainchild of longtime Judgement Day crew member, Brandon McCubbin, with Jon Bush from JD is filling in for drums for now. Damn good metal if you ask me.

A show is happening at 5927 Chabot Crest, Oakland, July 4th. Music will happen in the evening, and many musicians will play. If you’d like to play a song or two, let me know. If you’d like to attend, bring something to contribute to the show; food, drink, donation, etc.
