July Update: Out of Bounds, Haydn quartet cycle…

July 13, 2013

2 updates in a month! Wow!

I’ve started playing with a new group, The Out of Bounds Quartet, with Mads Tolling, Hande Erdem, and Emily Onderdonk. I’m only subbing for Joe Hebert, badass Oakland Symphony cellist, and the only jazz cello teacher I ever had. I remember learning Night in Tunisia with him back in the 90’s, and now I’m playing the same tune with his group. Full circle! I’m playing with them tonight at the Drew School in SF (double duty with Musical Art Quintet), and at Jazzschool in Berkeley next Friday the 19th. From the promo email: “Made up of four string players who love to groove, Out of Bounds brings jazz, rock, funk and fiddle music together into each eclectic performance.  If you enjoy the sounds of strings, improv and the groove, join OOB for a swinging evening of arrangements and originals.” There you go.

Some friends and I started The Haydn Enthusiasts, a society dedicated to performing the works of Haydn. We’re starting with a cycle of the complete quartets, which will only take about 2 and a half years! We’re playing every 3rd Thursday at Vessel Gallery in Oakland from 6:30 to 9:00, starting with the Opus 55 set this coming Thursday the 18th.

I decided to post some events happening down the road. Shows of note include Musical Art Quintet at the De Young Museum September 27th and Yoshi’s SF October 17th, and Judgement Day at the Rickshaw Stop September 7th.
