January 18, 2014

It’s 2014! I remember having really bad luck on Friday the 13th when I was a kid, but then having really good luck on Saturday the 14th, so maybe this year will be like that. Not that 2013 was a bad year… I’m tempted to do a 2013 retrospective, but who has time for that sort of thing. There’s some cool stuff happening next week, so lets talk about that instead!

Wednesday the 22nd is the monthly Classical Revolution Oakland show at Awaken Cafe. I have a feeling this will be our best show yet! Corey Mike of Town Quartet fame will play his own arrangement of Arvo Part’s Fratres for solo violin and strings, Yuri Kye and Evan Buttemer will play the solo parts for Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, and Kate Offer, Richard Mix, and Seth Arnopole will sing Bach’s “Coffee” Cantata. All of these pieces will have the appropriate instrumentation. Think strings, winds, spinets… well maybe just 1 spinet. That’s 3 masterpieces! If Fratres isn’t a masterpiece, I think it’s safe to say its one of the most popular pieces of the 20th century. 7-10pm, $5-20 suggested donation. 1429 Broadway, Oakland.

Friday the 24th La Dee Da is playing a house show in Oakland that is too cool to list the details. I can tell you that the show will be at show time. Contact me or us if you want to come. That’s what it says on

Sunday the 26th I’m playing with Awesome Orchestra for the “Petty Troubles” album release show. Matt Montgomery of Vs. Them fame wrote some awesome songs for rock band and orchestra which we recorded last year, so I’m really excited to play this show. We’re also playing music by and with legendary orchestral songwriter Van Dyke Parks. 4pm at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts. 1428 Alice st. Oakland. $15-$45.
